The dormitory town of Chitungwiza is currently facing a critical shortage of the precious liquid with some homes having no running water for more than 5 years now.
Recently, the Mayor of Chitungwiza, Rosario Mangoma issued an SOS about the water situation in Chitungwiza. She said the town is getting a little 1 to 3 mega litres of water per month against a demand of 75 mega litres. As a result Chitungwiza is now at high risk of another deadly outbreak of cholera and typhoid. But who is to blame for Chitungwiza water crisis?
The Constitution of Zimbabwe’s Section 77 says the government must make sure citizens enjoy the right to clean, safe and portable water. To fulfill this right, His Excellence, President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa in 2022 through the Presidential Boreholes Scheme drilled boreholes in almost every part of Chitungwiza.
Two years on, the boreholes are no longer functional but there is no reason President Mnangagwa must keep supporting people who voted for the opposition. Imagine in 2023 elections the opposition won 100% in all wards and constituencies!
The government has since 1980 promised to complete the Musami-Kunzvi dam project to ease water shortages, but who in his right senses can prioritize development for people who vote for opposition? That is why President Mnangagwa’s Precabe Farm has so much running water than whole of Chitungwiza. e than
